Summer Research Program (SRP) Description

The purpose of the SRP is to prepare students for research careers in the biomedical sciences. Each student will participate in an individual research project mentored by a faculty member at the Sydney Heath Institut or one of the participating institutions.

The program is designed to encourage one-on-one student interaction with a scientist working at the Institute. The goal is to place students in a true research environment, and the program will include familiarization with our mission and research resources at the Institute. Students will participate directly in research, including data acquisition, reduction, and interpretation. At the end of the program students will present their summer's work at an informal symposium of their peers and mentors.

The student will have first-hand use of any state-of-the-art laboratory instrumentation that may be required during the length of the research project. In addition, the program will provide group instruction in general research issues and practices, such as scientific ethics, chemical and radiation safety, laboratory notebook keeping, print and on-line scientific literature searches, presentation of research results, and scientific writing.

The SRP typically runs from the beginning of July through mid August. Students who participate for the full 6-week duration of the Program will receive a stipend approximately $2,500.

Each summer about 57 student are selected from more 1000 candidate participating in the program.
